FoGH Dog Show 2016
Date Published: Tue 21st Jun 2016
Despite the miserable start to Monday morning, a strong cohort of enthusiastic dogs and their owners turned up promptly to take part in the 5th FoGH Dog Show. The proceedings were kicked off by Best Young Handler won by Frank with Bear, a seasoned dog show competitor.
This was swiftly followed by Cutest Puppy and, while the judges deliberated, the crowds were entertained by the dulcet tones of Donny Osmond and his timeless classic ‘Puppy Love’. First place was eventually given to Alfred, a cute seven month old Westie. The judges found this category particularly hard to judge, as in their eyes (and those of the crowd), they were all so cute!
Best Paw Shaker saw the gentle giant Bruno do battle with Sonny and Tia. All exhibited the art of perfect handshaking, but Bruno just managed to snatch the top spot with perfect pose and confident paw offering.
A new category – Celebrity/Owner Look-Alike was enthusiastically received and congratulations go to Amalia and Ruby. Amalia put in a tremendous effort with a very effective make up transformation to look like Ruby, a black spaniel. A very worthy winner according to our judges!
For Best Trick, the audience was treated to some outstanding feats, with 'Find The Treat' from Hamish, fantastic singing on demand from Jarvis and some outstanding moves from Sonny, who was awarded the top prize.
From this point onwards, the dog show took on an interesting turn, with the Fancy Dress. Dogs transformed in to Lions, wolfs in Grandma’s clothing, Harry Potter, Shakespearian characters, and a very convincing Che Guevara, with beret, scarf and obligatory bullet belt. Judges awarded the top prize to Minnie as Harry Potter.
As a finale, Musical Sits took place, with dogs parading around the ring to the tunes of ‘Who let the Dog’s Out?’ (Ba Ha Men), ‘Hound Dog’ (Elvis Presley) and ‘The Big Bad Wolf’ (Duck Sauce). All was going well until the PA system packed up due to dampness. Tragedy was swiftly averted with music through the car stereo, with David Bowies 'Diamond Dogs' ending the category. This was an interesting round for certain as it kept the judges on their toes trying to spot dogs to eliminate throughout the process.
At this point the rain became a little more intense and a lot of the crowd melted away in search of warmth and hot drinks, however the stalwarts that remained saw Tia crowned as Best in Show.
Many thanks to the Courier for providing the Goodie bags and treats on the day and to our Judges, Susan Schibli, Paula Day and Ben Chapelard. Sue Kaner
