The Heritage Lottery Fund Bid
After what seems to be a long time, we can share the exciting news that we were successful with our Heritage Lottery bid. On January 8th 2014, HLF announced we had been awarded £2.3 million for the refurbishment of the Park. This means we can start work to restore and enhance many of the familiar features in the Park. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped build the vision of the Park and particular thanks to the Friends group, without whom this would not be possible.
What happens next?
There will be some time before you see any of the planned work taking place on the ground, but we will be putting preparations in place with a view to starting the capital works in November. In the meantime, we will be working through the process to engage the Landscape Architect and Project Coordinator again and hopefully, they should be back on board by the end of February.
The Architects will start by working on the technical designs and preparing the tender documents. Given the value of this contract, we are required to advertise all work in the Official Journal of the European Union. The tender period for the work will be from July onwards, with the aim of starting on site at the end of October or early November. The capital works are scheduled for completion in December 2015, although as yet we have not agreed the phasing of the work.
Naturally there will be considerable disruption to the Park while work takes place, with some areas closed off. I hope you will be patient and please do contact us if you have any questions.
The format for the project will stay the same, in that we will continue with the Project Board meeting on a monthly basis. The board will be made up of members of the project team and representatives from the Friends group, along with specialists when required.
One early addition will be the appointment of the HLF Community Engagement Officer, who will deliver the Action Plan for the next five years. This post will based in the Park working alongside the regular Sodexo staff and Kent High Weald Partnership delivering volunteer activities and developing skills. We hope you will see a new face in the Park in early March.
